The Myth, The Man...
Q: So where are you from? Where do you live?
A: Originally I'm from a small town in Northwest Iowa. I kinda moved around a bit, though. I've lived in Utah, California, Montana, Missouri, Arizona, Kansas, and even lived in Europe for a bit. But now I'm in Sioux City.
Q: Why Sioux City?
A: Why not?
Q: What kind of music do you play?
A: Well, I started out playing electric blues and classic rock, but I'm better known as an alternative country singer and songwriter. I do old country and some contemporary covers, too. Gotta keep it lively, you know.
Q:
Cool! Who are your influences? Are there artists you look up to?
A: Of course! Todd Snider and John Prine for sure, Robert Earl Keen Jr. is good, too. And Fred Eaglesmith. Tom Waits, believe it or not, and Johnny Cash. He's influenced everyone!
Q: Tom Waits? Really?
A: Tom Waits. Really.
Q: Most musicians have had "day jobs." What did you do before you started performing?
A: Ha! Most musicians still DO have day jobs! Let me think (pauses and looks at the ceiling), I've been a hay baler, tractor driver, bean walker, worked construction, was a meat cutter, I sold meat for a while, was a delivery driver, waiter, bartender, dishwasher, short order cook, pizza maker, septic tank installer, wood splitter, road construction flagman, I got to drive the pilot car too, sold insurance, was a Spanish interpreter, worked as a social worker and youth counselor, groundskeeper, and clerk.
Q: Septic tank installer?
A: Why do you think I learned how to play guitar?
Q: Where do you play?
A: Boy, quite a few places! (He paused and dug a list out of his pocket -- it looked like an old schedule.) Lemme see... Mike's Saloon, The Patio, Court Street Tavern, The Chesterfield, Luciano's, The Jolly Roger, The Farmer's Market, Meet Virginia's, Rebo's, The Eagles Club, Sioux City Music Club, Club Casmo, Shennon's on the Green, Centerfield, Sioux City Country Club, Dakota Dunes Country Club, and, of course, a bunch of private parties for banks and law firms and whatnot.
Q: How does it work? I mean, if someone books you, what happens?
A: Simple! I show up, set up a small PA system and a couple microphones, tune up and play!
